Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide

Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide is an environmentally-friendly control method for managing, and potentially eradicating Parkinsonia aculeata.

The Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide capsules are inserted into the tree where they are sealed with a plug ensuring safe and effective placement.  The capsule dissolves, releasing the biological agent into the vascular system of the tree, killing it from the inside. The process offers a direct hit on the weed with minimal environmental impact.

Active Ingredient: Biological Organism Fungus (Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae NT039, Macrophomina phaseolina NT094 & Neoscytalidium novaehollandiae QLD 003)

Description

Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide

Active Ingredient: Biological Organism Fungus (Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae NT039, Macrophomina phaseolina NT094 & Neoscytalidium novaehollandiae QLD 003)

Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide is made from naturally occurring fungal pathogens that induce dieback in the woody weed Parkinsonia aculeata (also known as Parkinsonia, Barbados Flower-Fence, Horse Bean, Jelly Bean Tree, Jerusalem Thorn, Mexican Palo Verde, Mexican Paloverde).  Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide is an environmentally-friendly control method for managing, and potentially eradicating Parkinsonia aculeata.

Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide consists of one or a combination of specific fungi which have been isolated from weeds growing naturally in Australia that exhibited dieback disease. The fungi are grown on a substrate (carrier) in sterile conditions until fully colonised. The inoculum is then encapsulated or compacted to a dosage form that is stable and conveniently delivered to the weed to induce dieback.

The Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide is administered by drilling a hole slightly larger in diameter than a capsule into the trunk of the weed. Moisture within the Injecta 400 drill wound reactivates fungal growth with subsequent fungal colonisation of the target tree.  The Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide capsules are inserted into the tree with the Injecta 400 Applicator where they are sealed with a plug ensuring safe and effective placement.  The capsule dissolves, releasing the biological agent into the vascular system of the tree, killing it from the inside. The process offers a direct hit on the weed with minimal environmental impact.

Once injected with Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide, Infection occurs in the stem/trunk of the tree at the site of insertion of the capsule.  Endophytic fungi colonise the internal plant tissue at the application site which subsequently leads to pathogenic infection.

External symptoms include, but are not restricted to, large elliptical surface lesions around the inoculation wound, change in bark colouration from green to yellow, brown or red, leaf drop, dieback of stem and branch tips, bark splitting and peeling. Necrosis of the stem kills the vascular tissues leading to severe stem damage and eventual plant death.

Parkinsonia is native to tropical America but has spread throughout the world as an ornamental and shade tree. It can form dense impenetrable thorny thickets along river courses, bore drains, floodplains and grasslands. This makes land inaccessible for people and animals, restricts stock access to drinking water, decreases the amount of pasture available and excludes native vegetation.

Parkinsonia has the potential to invade up to 70% of Australia’s mainland and is one of the worst weed threats to Australia’s rangelands.  It generally invades waterways first, with infestations expanding outward to wetlands, flood plains and pastures. Dense impenetrable thickets can now be found throughout Northern Australia with significant impacts on productivity and land values.

Will the biological agent in Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide have the same as effect on native trees in Western Australia? Is it just spreading this agent that will do damage to native forests?

Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide is registered and recommended only to induce dieback in Parkinsonia aculeata.  To the best of our knowledge, the naturally occurring fungal pathogens will not have the same effect if injected into other native species of trees.

  2. Hi , would Di-Bak Parkinsonia Bioherbicide work the same on prickly acacia. I have large trees going into my house dam and it is used for the garden and the prickly acacia is out of control in there. Would this work the same on these tree’s?

Tips For Use

  • Ensure that the plug to the hole is well secured.
  • The plug is vitally important to create a humid atmosphere within the tree for the capsule to disintegrate and the granules to dissolve so the fungal pathogens are translocated within the tree.

Restraints –Buffer zones:

  • Do not apply within 500 metres of orchards (particularly mango and avocado orchards), coffee plantations, or agricultural crops (including sunflower, maize, sorghum, cotton, soybean, mungbean and field bean).
  • Do not apply within 50 metres of stands or individual woody trees such as grey box (Eucalyptus microcarpa) or related native tree species.

Precautions:

  • Avoid direct contact with the contents of capsules.
  • Not for food-producing use.
  • Do not wet capsules, as the casing will dissolve.

Storage:

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • This is a biological product that can be damaged by heat and should be protected from high temperatures at all times.
  • The product should be stored at less than 30°C. Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Safety Directions:

  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • When using the product wear elbow-length chemical resistant gloves.
  • Wash hands after use.

First Aid Instructions:

  • If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
